VERY BRIEF HISTORICAL
NOTE ABOUT I.O.P.
In 1978, many leading brain scientists and
researchers from around the world appointed and supported by the
scientific, medical and governmental authorities of their countries
formed the Committee for the Foundation of the International
Organization of Psychophysiology. The purpose of that very large
International Committee was to officially establish the
International Organization of Psychophysiology on legal grounds as a
professional organization according to standard precepts of
International Law. In order to achieve this, the Founding Committee
obtained help and accreditation from the United Nations and the
World Health Organization.
After intense preparation, in 1982, the International Organization
of Psychophysiology (I.O.P.) was formally founded and its
Constitution and By-Laws were fully accredited by the United Nations
(I.O.P., 1982). I.O.P. was recognized and admitted to the United
Nations as the only accredited world organization representing
Psychophysiology in accordance with International law. Since 1982,
I.O.P. is also in Consultative Status with the United Nations.
Consequently, I.O.P. selectively participates on United Nations
Programs/Projects, Commissions and Committees such as Applications
of Science and Technologies to Development, Health Standards,
Narcotic Drugs, Medical Ethics, Crime Prevention and Control, Status
of Women, Social Development, Human Rights, Education, World Peace
and others.
In 1987, the International Organization of Psychophysiology for its
highly significant contribution was awarded with the prestigious
"Peace Messenger Prize" by the United Nations General Assembly and
its Secretary General.
I.O.P. maintains relations with 2,122 institutions around the world
and its Membership comes from 49 countries, 5 continents,
continental sub-divisions and regions of the world.
One of I.O.P.’s goals is to strengthen Psychophysiology by uniting
psychophysiologists around the world and integrating
interdisciplinary Psychophysiology as a leading basic and applied
medical/brain/behavioral neuroscience. Several national associations
of Psychophysiology have been established and are officially
affiliated to I.O.P. also as national chapters of I.O.P. in those
countries. Other candidacies from different countries are now being
considered and evaluated.
Since 1983, I.O.P. is also publishing its highly acclaimed
International Journal of Psychophysiology
with the most fruitful cooperation and support of Elsevier Science
Publishers, the most distinguished publishing company dedicated to
the highest standards of excellence in medical sciences. This
official journal of I.O.P. which since 1999 is the only monthly
publication in Psychophysiology constitutes a unique and highly
prestigious international forum of integrated Neuroscientific
Psychophysiology. Moreover, the articles accepted by the referees
and published in the International
Journal of Psychophysiology enjoy the largest
readership in the world since this journal has the most
institutional subscriptions among journals in the field of
Psychophysiology. For instance, several Special Issues of the International
Journal of Psychophysiology are dedicated to most
crucial themes pertaining to the future development of
Psychophysiology.
Every two years, I.O.P. holds World Congresses of Psychophysiology,
recognized to be entitled as "The Olympics of the Brain". The 15th
World Congress of Psychophysiology - the Olympics of the Brain - of
the International Organization of Psychophysiology, associated with
the United Nations will be held in Budapest, Hungary, August 30 -
September 4, 2010.
